The best type depends on the look and fit you want: straight cutters make plugs with straight sides, while tapered cutters make plugs that narrow slightly for a snug, easy-to-seat fit , the Tapered plug is usually easier to remove for a future repair . Both types are available, including 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", and 5/8" options in the Timberline set. The Timberline 3/8" straight cutter is useful for consistent-sided plugs, while the Timberline 3/8" tapered cutter offers a wedging fit. In my shop I like the 8-piece Timberline set which includes both styles, so I can select the type that best fits my customer expectations of the job / project outcome . Quality is always your best employee because of their great work and resistance to break down.
