The shank diameter (SHK) affects the stability of the bit during operation and how it fits your router. A 1/2" shank is preferred for added rigidity and reduced vibration which gives you a smoother cut, especially with larger cove router bits. The 1/4" shank bits are great for light-duty routers and for projects requiring finer control. The Amana Tool 49114 has a sturdy 1/2" shank, and the Amana Tool 49100 is used for smaller routers with its 1/4" shank. I have both shank sizes available in my shop so I can select the bit that best fits the router I'm using to the project I'm creating. The best outcome is using quality bits and my customers demand the very best outcome.
