Question: What are the different types of machine vices?
Answer: There are many types of machine vices, including plain vices, swivel vices, and universal vices. Plain vices hold workpieces securely in one line, swivel vices can rotate horizontally for angular operations, and universal vices allow movement in multiple directions for complex machining tasks. Each type is used based on the specific job requirements of the machining operation. In my shop I have many of these vises for the many operations going on there.
Question: How do you line up a vise on a mill?
Answer: To align a vise on a mill, I use a dial indicator attached to the mill's spindle to check the alignment of the vise jaws with the machine's table travel. Just move the table and watch the indicator for any runout then adjust the vise until the jaws are parallel to the table's axis, ensuring accurate workpiece positioning. In my shop we take the time to get the alignment perfect and the outcome of the job comes out perfect and on time.
