Question: Are router collet extensions safe?
Answer: Router collet extensions can be used safely if they are high-quality, properly installed, and used within their recommended speed limits. However, they may introduce additional runout and reduce the rigidity of the setup, increasing the risk of vibration or bit breakage. Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines and use caution when operating with extensions. In my shop I never use collet extensions because I don't want to take the chance of injury or destruction of my workpiece.
Question: How to measure router collet size?
Answer: To measure a router collet use a caliper to measure the internal diameter of the collet opening where the router bit shank fits. The most common sizes and in my many routers are 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) and 1/2 inch (12.7 mm). Make sure to measure across the widest part of the opening for an accurate size. Always rely on the manufacturers specifications for safe operation.
