The number of wings gives you how smooth of the cutter will perform and the efficiency of material removal. I have found having more wings generally provide a smoother finish and can extend cutter life, while having fewer wings may be the way to go for faster cuts on certain materials. In my shop I have used both the SC500 and SC509, 3-wing design for great work and beautiful finishes. The three cutter design works best for me and my customers are very happy with their projects outcome.
